About Perspectives
The Harry and Margery Boswell Collection of Scottish Art, featured in this exhibition, was begun in 1996 by Margery Boswell in honour of her husband, Harry, through a generous gift to the University of St Andrews, in acknowledgement of their close associations with the Kingdom of Fife and the University. The Collection forms a lasting memorial to Harry and Margery Boswell in recognition of their interest in and commitment to Scottish history, culture and art. The family of Harry and Margery Boswell continue to support the Boswell Art Collection, through their active interest in its development and further generous donations. They have a strong interest in seeing the collection used for education and community engagement.
Perspectives is based on an idea that the interpretation of art is personal, coming from the viewer rather than an expert or the artist themself. Over the last few months, four groups from the local community, including University students, local residents and college students, were prompted to create their own interpretive labels for the artworks without any prior knowledge of the piece. Each piece in the exhibition is displayed alongside two interpretive labels and a traditional label. There are opportunities in the galleries for visitors to record their responses to the artwork and to write their own labels.
